This privately guided small group expedition showcases two of Borneo’s best destinations. Designed specifically for those that don’t have a lot of time to spare, but still want to see the best the island has to offer. From the mighty Kinabatangan River in Sabah, to the spectacular rainforests and Orang-Utans of Tanjung Puting National Park, we gain an insight to what the entire island once looked like and marvel at the biodiversity that exists in the heart of the Malay Archipelago.
Our Journey begins in Sandakan where we travel by boat along the spectacular lower Kinabatangan River to our destination in Sukau. Here we spend three days taking boat journeys out along the waterways in the early mornings and late afternoons in search of wildlife. From Sandakan we travel to Kalimantan Tengah to visit Tanjung Puting National Park. Here we are surrounded by spectacular rainforest and peat swamp environments, the preferred habitats of the endemic proboscis monkeys and Orang-Utans. We will spend time walking through the park and visiting the world famous Camp Leakey.
DAY 1. ARRIVAL DAY
On arrival at Sandakan, guests will be met and transferred to our local hotel where we will have a briefing and introductory session.
DAYS 2 – 5. SANDAKAN & THE KINABATANGAN RIVER, SABAH.
We will spend 3 full days on the Kinabatangan River, described as Malaysia’s gift to the earth. The Kinabatangan is home to 10 species of primates, a myriad of bird species as well as the elusive Bornean elephant. On our return to Sandakan we will visit Sepilok Orang-Utan rehabilitation Centre and Labuk bay Proboscis Reserve to view these unique monkeys up close.
DAYS 6 – 11. CAMP LEAKEY & TANJUNG PUTING NATIONAL PARK
From Sandakan we travel to Kalimantan Tengah to visit Tanjung Puting National Park and the landmark Camp Leakey.
Tanjung Puting is the largest and most diverse protected example of extensive coastal tropical heath and peat swamp forest which used to cover much of southern Borneo. Tanjung Puting is recognized as one of the most important and outstanding provincial treasures in Kalimantan Tengah.
The best known animals in Tanjung Puting are the Orang-Utans, made famous through the efforts of Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) based at Camp Leakey research facility. Tanjung Puting also boasts 8 other primate species including Proboscis monkeys and Gibbons. There are over 220 species of birds, two species of crocodiles, dozens of reptiles and amphibians, many of which are highly threatened species.
DAY 12. DEPARTURE DAY
After breakfast this morning guests will be transferred to the International airport for their onward journey.
